Roofing in Wirral

What we see on roofs in Wirral

Wirral roofing demand sits across two distinct exposures. The west side of the peninsula, from Heswall down to West Kirby and Hoylake, faces the Dee estuary and the prevailing south-westerlies that carry salt off the Irish Sea. Properties here run heavy to 1930s detached and semi-detached stock built when concrete tile was new. Most of those original tiles are in the second half of their service life now, and the replacements we run on streets around Telegraph Road, Long Lane and Banks Road are usually Marley Edgemere or Duo Edge in slate grey because that is the closest match to the existing rooflines. The salt-air fault we see most often is not the tiles themselves but the mortar bedding at the ridge and the flashing detail around chimneys. Both fail before the tiles do.

The east side, from Birkenhead through Wallasey and out to Bromborough, is older. Victorian terrace and Edwardian semi run the full length of those streets, with original Welsh slate still on the roof in many cases. Welsh slate done properly outlasts most owners. The work pattern here is more chimney-led: repointing, lead flashing renewal where Code 4 has gone soft, and verge work on terraces where the original mortar is washing out.

Across the peninsula our typical Wirral lead time is two to four weeks from inspection to scaffold up. The Liverpool Team covers Wirral and answers on 0151 268 8190 between 06:00 and 20:00 every day of the year.

Guttering on Wirral leans toward full replacement more than piecemeal repair, particularly on the 1930s detached and semi-detached stock where the original uPVC is now 30 to 40 years old and the brackets have pulled from softened fascia boards. On streets around Pensby Road in Heswall and Noctorum Avenue in Prenton, a blocked gutter sitting against a rotten fascia is a two-trade job: new fascia board first, then the guttering fixed to solid timber. For the premium detached stock around Brimstage Road and Manor Drive in Heswall, we supply aluminium Deepflow guttering rather than standard uPVC, because the run lengths on those properties are long and aluminium handles thermal expansion across a 10-metre run without the joint failures that uPVC develops. Cast-iron-effect aluminium from Alumasc is the call where the property character demands it. Downpipes go in as 68mm round on standard stock, upsized to 110mm square where the catchment area is large. Liverpool Team covers all of Wirral.

Failed guttering does more damage than most homeowners realise. Overflowing sections soak the fascia board behind them, rot the soffit beneath, and if the overflow is persistent enough it tracks down the external wall and into the cavity. The guttering call comes first, but the bill that follows often includes fascia and soffit repairs that a functioning gutter would have prevented.

We clear, repair, and replace guttering across the full run of property types in our coverage area, from Victorian terrace in Birkenhead and Toxteth with their original cast-iron sections through to 1980s estate housing on uPVC ogee that just needs a new section and a couple of brackets.

What we run on guttering

For replacement guttering on standard residential stock we supply and fit Deepflow 115mm half-round or Ogee uPVC from Kayflow or equivalent. On Victorian and Edwardian properties where the original cast-iron profile is part of the character, we supply Heritage cast-iron style aluminium from Alumasc, which carries the same profile and is maintenance-free.

Downpipes go in as 68mm round on most standard terraces and semi-detached stock. Where there is a longer run or a large roof catchment area feeding one pipe, we step up to 110mm square. All brackets are fixed into masonry with stainless steel fixings rather than plastic plugs into render.

When replacement beats repair

uPVC guttering that has cracked through is a replace-and-move-on job; the material cannot be reliably welded in-situ. Sagging sections where the brackets have pulled from the fascia are a fascia problem first, a guttering problem second. If the board behind the bracket has softened, the bracket will not hold regardless of how many screws go in.

What it costs

A full guttering replacement on a three-bedroom semi, including all brackets, stop ends, unions, outlets and a single downpipe, typically runs between £450 and £850 plus VAT depending on the run length and the access required. Cast-iron style aluminium adds around 40% over standard uPVC. We also offer a clear-and-flush service for gutters that just need unblocking, which runs between £80 and £180 depending on storey height.

What we back it with

All guttering replacement work carries a 5-year workmanship guarantee. Kayflow and Alumasc materials carry their own manufacturer warranties, typically 10 years on uPVC and 25 years on the aluminium Heritage range.
