Upton sits north of Chester city centre inside CH2, between the A41 and the A56, and it is about as far from Chester's Roman-wall conservation constraints as you can get while still being in Chester. The housing stock is overwhelmingly modern detached: 1980s, 1990s and 2000s estates spread across Upton Heath, Wealstone Lane and the closes around Moston Road, with the occasional 1970s semi mixed in on the older residential sections.

The roofing specification on this stock is Marley pantile, almost universally. The interlocking concrete pantile was the standard builder's choice across Cheshire's new-build estates from the late 1970s through the 2000s, and Upton has a lot of it. Where the builds are 1980s, those tiles are now over forty years old and the surface coating has gone, making them porous and prone to cracking under frost.
